The growth and development of Esports in Canada has been a long time coming. Major Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are home to vast grassroots gaming communities that have been waiting for a pinnacle platform to enable Canadian Esports to thrive. “We’re trying to bring eSports into Canada in a way that will foster local talent, while simultaneously being marketable to the more traditional media. We also recognize that eSports has it’s own character and want to keep that intact, while still guiding it forward into the future.” – Carl-Edwin Michel, CEO Michel’s organization, The Canadian League of Gamers (CLG), entered the scene with ‘Northern Arena’, an inaugural event taking place during the 2015 Canadian Video Game Awards. With a $20,000 prize pool Counter Strike: Global Offensive LAN tournament in the major Canadian city of Toronto, heads were sure to turn.
